Doing the Dew

What You Will Need
  1. water
  2. ice cubes
  3. paper towels
  4. timer
  5. 3 glass jars or drinking glasses
  6. 2 styrofoam cup
  7. 2 empty tin cans (remove label) or empty coffee cans
  8. 2 paper cups
  9. small electric fan
  10. thermometer
Procedure

1-In this expirement we will explore how dew forms and why it forms on some surfaces and not others.

2-Start out by filling one of the drinking glasses (or jars) with ice cubes. Now add enough water to cover the ice cubes. Fill a second glass with just water.

3-Dry the outisde of the glasses with paper towels and then sit the glasses in an area where they will not have a draft on them. Leave them sit for about 15 minutes.

4-What do you find when you examine the glasses? Jot down your findings and then move on to the second part of the expirement. We will discuss findings after the experiment is over.

5-Now take one styrofoam cup, one can and one paper cup and fill them with ice and enough water to cover the ice. Then take the remaining cups and can and fill them with water. Don't forget to dry the outside!

6-As before, sit the cups and cans somewhere out of a draft and observe after 15 minutes. Again, write down your observations and move on to the last part.

7-In the last part of the expirement we'll use all three glass jars or glasses and the fan. Fill two of the glasses with ice and enough water to cover the ice. Fill the third with just water.

8- Take one of the glasses with ice and place it about 3 feet from the fan and turn the fan on low. Be sure that the air from the fan will only blow on this glass and not the others.

9-Place the remaining two glasses away from the fan. Place the thermometer in the glass with ice. Observe the glass with the thermometer and record the temperature when dew forms on the outside of that glass. When this happens, observe the other glasses and record your findings.
